Qur'an

The teaching and learning of Qur'an is centred on five specific areas:

  1. Recitation
  2. Memorisation
  3. Ulum-Ul-Qur'an [Science of the Qur'an]
  4. Tafseer
  5. Translation

A very big emphasis in the department is on recitation followed by memorisation. Further importance is also put on the understanding and correct pronunciation of those short Suras' recited in salah - the school and department feel it is very important for the pupils to know exactly what they are saying in their worship.

Given that there is no National Curriculum syllabus on the study of Qur'an - that being due to the fact that it is not recognised as curriculum subject, the department has itself produced its own detailed Schemes of Work. This was met with much enthusiasm by Ofsted during their inspection of the department in January 2008.

Therefore, pupils are required to read/recite the Qur'an fluently without any major mistakes, with the proper pronunciation by the end of KS3. As a minimum, they are also required to learn the whole of Juz 30 by the end of KS4. The department also recognises the many differing ways in which the Qur'an can be taught, as a result, we have tried to embrace all different approaches rather than rigidly stick to the traditional one. In view of this, the Qur'an department has developed excellent relationships with local Masjids [Mosques] to ensure we work in partnership with them and that pupils who attend memorisation classes in Madrasas after school are not repeating the same lessons.

Resources in the Qur'an department are rich and varied, for example, we have different copies of the Mashaf and do not stick to one style. Further internet searches and e-homework is very much recommended and encouraged. Books also vary with the Qiadah for beginners, to different and more detailed Tafseer and tajweed books.

Finally, a most unique feature of the Qur'an department is the annual Qur'an Competition, held in summer ever year. This year will see the competitions seventh year. Here pupils will be expected to memorise and recite a randomly chosen chapter of the Qur'an to the whole school and a panel who have various levels of expertise in Qur'an. Winners will be judged on their delivery and will receive a monetary reward - prizes in the past have amount to £1,000 in cash!
